The administration of US President Donald Trump plans to withdraw federal approval for US Wind’s 2.2GW offshore wind farm off the coast of Maryland, according to a filing in the US District Court in Delaware. Department of Justice attorneys asked the court to stay a lawsuit challenging the Interior Department’s approval of the Maryland Offshore Wind Project. They said the agency would move to vacate the facility’s construction and operations plan by September 12.
US Wind is owned by funds managed by Apollo Global Management, an American investment firm, and Renexia, a subsidiary of Italy’s Toto Holding. The project is scheduled to begin construction next year.
The Biden administration approved the US Wind project in September of last year. The project has final state and federal permits, but the Environmental Protection Agency recently directed the Maryland Department of Environment to reissue an air quality permit under federal law, citing a procedural error in the initial approval.
The US administration will also act by September 12 in a separate lawsuit brought by officials in Ocean City, Maryland, to vacate approval of the facility's construction and operations plan. That case is pending in federal court in Maryland.
