3D image of the next generation rock installation vessel Jan De Nul ordered. This image shows the vessel installing rock on top of a subsea energy cableJan De Nul has ordered a new vessel, the George W. Goethals, designed to protect subsea infrastructure. It will focus mainly on projects in the North Sea and Southeast Asia. The vessel has a carrying capacity of up to 37,000 tonnes and is fitted with a flexible vertical fall pipe and an inclined fall pipe system, enabling the placement of large rocks at depths of up to 400 metres.

The vessel will operate as an Ultra-Low Emission vessel (ULEv), equipped with a dual exhaust filter system that removes up to 99% of nanoparticles through a diesel particulate filter and nitrogen oxide reduction system. Its engines are able to run on biofuel and green methanol, while a hybrid power plant combining generators, batteries and drive technology will further reduce carbon dioxide emissions and optimise fuel use. Four electric excavators will be installed on board, enabling efficient loading of large rocks without the need for a dedicated conveyor belt or onshore crane.
